Crime & The Law

Getting caught is the only sin.

Getting arrested — the taser

Wanted criminals rarely stand still to be cuffed, so police carry a taser — a non-lethal, close-range sidearm that fires once every 5 seconds. A tased suspect is incapacitated: frozen on the ground, seeing stars, unable to move for a few seconds. While a suspect is tased and an officer is close, the arrest bar fills — but the stun wears off before the bar completes, so the officer has to keep re-tasing (racing the 5-second cooldown) until the arrest lands. Run far enough between stuns and the bar drains. It's a genuine cat-and-mouse: the criminal scrambles the moment they can move, the cop tries to keep them pinned. Surrendering (standing still) also fills the bar, for anyone who'd rather do the time than the chase.

Heat — your criminal record

Crimes raise your heat (0–5). Heat 1–3: police can ticket you — $100 / $200 / $300. Heat 4–5: you're wanted — a warrant, arrest on sight, and jail. Heat decays slowly while you stay online and clean. Pay tickets with /payticket; unpaid tickets keep your record hot.

No badge with a record: you can't join the police while you have any heat on you — lay low until it clears before switching to the force.

Jail & bail

Arrested at heat 4–5, you serve a short stint in jail. The key rule: jail time only ticks down while you're online — quitting pauses your sentence, so you can't log off to skip it and you'll return with exactly the time you had left. Don't want to wait? Post bail with /bail to walk free immediately — a deliberately cheap $200 (heat 4) or $400 (heat 5), and you get 60% back if you stay clean through probation. Serving the time out is always free.

Pickpocketing

Con Artists and Burglars can /steal from a nearby player's cash-in-hand — a percentage roll, hard-capped at $300 per lift so no wallet is a jackpot. Failing alerts the victim and builds heat. Keep your money in the bank.

Shop robbery

Rob a store with /rob: hold position through a 30-second heist while loot accrues (bailing early nets almost nothing), then run the loot bag to a GPS drop within 3 minutes. Base take up to $400 plus a risk bonus per officer online — more cops, more money, more chance you eat a warrant. Robbery also spikes that shop type's prices city-wide and drains the branch's stock. Dying on the run drops the bag where you fall — anyone can grab it.

Carjacking & the stolen-car market

Locked cars can be /carjacked (Burglar/Con Artist, ~50% odds — 25% against a Fingerprint Sensor; failure alerts the owner and builds heat). Then the business begins:

DealRateNotes
Sell hot car to a licensed mechanic3.5% of its price/sellcar near a mechanic with a Mechanic License; they /acceptcar. Buying & chopping hot cars is licensed-only now.
City fence (no licensed mechanic around)2.5%At the garage — car goes to the city impound
Owner recovers from mechanic/impound5% — always/recovercar at the garage; the mechanic pockets the margin
Owner catches it before fencing3%/buyback — race the thief to the garage

Cars are never destroyed by theft — worst case your car sits impounded until you pay the 5%. Only a mechanic scrapping an unclaimed car after two in-game days can truly end one.

Bribes

Wanted and cornered? Offer the cop /bribe ($100 default — raise it if your record's worth more). If they /acceptbribe, that officer can't damage or arrest you for 2 minutes. Yes, this makes dirty cops a career option.

Hits & bounties

Put money on anyone's head — civilian or cop — with /hit [playerid] [amount] ($50–$2000). Browse open contracts with /hits. Whoever downs the target claims the bounty automatically. A hit lasts one game day and persists across relogs — it stays on the target's head until they're killed or they survive the full day (even across multiple sessions), after which the placer is refunded.

Convoy robbery

Police collect shop register cash and run it to City Hall. That carried cash can be taken — /robconvoy near a carrying officer is the single biggest leak in the city's money loop, and it makes you instantly, maximally wanted.

Career advice: crime pays better than honest work per minute — until the first arrest. Tickets, bail, hospital fees and a hot record are the real tax bracket.
